Pride Month 2023

Written by Jonathan TranPham As the founder of reflect and a proud gay man, I want to wish you a happy Pride. The Month of Pride is a time of celebration, reflection, and progress. Our community has seen significant wins in recent years, from the advancement of LGBTQIA+ rights to increased visibility and acceptance. These victories have brought us closer to a world where every individual can love and express themselves freely. Sadly, it is disheartening to see that despite the amazing progress we’ve made, it can sometimes feel like we are taking steps backward, especially with the recent backlash and boycotts of Bud Light and Target. The Human Rights Campaign has recently declared a state of emergency for LGBTQIA+ people in the United States, driven by an unprecedented and dangerous spike in anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation aimed especially towards the trans community. Discrimination, prejudice, and ignorance persist, reminding us that our fight for equality is far from over. More than 75 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills have been signed into law this year alone, surpassing the already alarming numbers of last year, which was previously the worst year on record.

In the face of such adversity, I want to acknowledge these setbacks and the profound impact they can have on our mental health. The assault on our rights and dignity can evoke feelings of fear, anger, and frustration. It is crucial, now more than ever, that we come together as a community, supporting and uplifting one another. During Pride Month, as we celebrate the joyous and empowering spirit that unites us and continue the fight for equality, let's also take proactive steps to care for our mental well-being. Here are some actionable steps that I encourage you to consider:

Connect with others

Pride Month is a fantastic opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences and identities. Engage with LGBTQIA+ community centers, organizations, or join online forums where you can share stories, offer support, and celebrate your authentic self. Whether you choose to participate in local Pride events, volunteer, or connect virtually, remember that the community is here to celebrate diversity and embrace you with open arms. Find balance between activism and rest

While activism and advocacy are important during Pride Month, don't forget to take care of yourself. Pace yourself, set realistic goals, and find a balance between fighting for change and honoring your well-being. Take breaks when needed, engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, and prioritize self-care. Remember, you are making a difference just by being true to yourself and living authentically.

Practice self-compassion

In a world that may not always understand or fully embrace your journey, it's important to be kind to yourself. Embrace self-compassion and remember that everyone's path is unique. Celebrate your progress, honor your individuality, and give yourself permission to prioritize self-care and set boundaries when needed. You deserve love and kindness, both from others and yourself. Build a supportive community

Surround yourself with people who uplift and accept you for who you are. Seek out LGBTQIA+ affirming therapists or support groups that understand the unique challenges you may face. Remember, seeking support from a therapist who specializes in LGBTQIA+ issues can be immensely beneficial. They can provide a safe and non-judgmental space to explore your feelings, gain perspective, and develop coping strategies.
